Plastics and Marine Life

The applications for plastic are wide and varied, and over “300 million tons of plastic are produced globally every year”. Each year, at least 8 million tons of plastic find their way into our oceans and it is estimated that “80% of all marine debris, from the surface waters to deep-sea sediments” comprises plastic waste.
The threat to our global marine life is that plastic which is a toxic substance, is often ingested, and many species are entangled by debris which can lead to injury and death. Ingestion often causes marine wildlife to die from starvation due to their stomachs being filled with plastic debris. Floating plastics can also disrupt ecosystems by spreading invasive marine organisms and bacteria through toxic contaminants accumulating on the surface of plastic materials after prolonged exposure to seawater. The transfer of contaminants from marine life and humans can be linked through the consumption of seafood. The impact on food and health is concerning as several chemicals which are used in the production of plastic materials are known to be carcinogenic. Health risks include interference with the body’s endocrine system and as well as various neurological and immune disorders in both wildlife and humans.

Whilst plastic is a versatile material and is suited to many applications such as building and construction, sports equipment and household items, we can employ effective actions which can reduce plastic waste. By recycling and reusing plastic materials, the environmental risks associated with plastic are reduced. Many household items can be replaced by using more sustainable, biodegradable materials such as wheat straw. Wheat straw is the stalk left after wheat grains are
harvested. It is considered as an agricultural waste product and does not contain any protein, gluten, or allergens which are only stored in the grains. Husk Home has revitalised this agricultural material to create eco-friendly and sustainable products with the desire to reduce plastic pollution which affects all areas of our lives and the environment.

Husk Home has created a fabulous bento box made from 70% wheat straw. Rather than taking your disposable lunch box to work or wherever you go, you can be confident that you are helping to reduce the impact of plastic on the environment and your health.
